"Bricks and Bees" documents the development of three remarkable sculptural installations in India and Holland in 2005 and 2006. These projects were developed as collaborations between the British sculptor Andrew Burton and a group of Indian craftsmen and women including bamboo breakers, ladder-makers, brick masons and cow-dung workers."Bricks and Bees" records the making of this work and celebrates the skills of a community of artisans whose traditional livelihoods are increasingly under threat as India modernises. The book explores the dynamic relationship between an evocative Indian landscape scattered with brickyards and bees' nests, and the development of a working process that tested the boundaries of sculpture and craft. Vividly illustrated with photographs of the sculpture and the landscape that inspired it, it includes essays by the leading Indian critic Gayatri Sinha and sculptor Joel Fisher, and face-to-face interviews with the craftsmen and women who collaborated on the projects. |
