Economic Impact Assessment by Cllr. Mick Henry, Leader of Gateshead Council Mick Henry has been Leader of Gateshead Council since 2002. During his leadership, the Council has maintained a commitment to continually improving services for local people, whilst delivering world-class cultural facilities that have repositioned not only Gateshead, but also the whole North East region, as a centre of cultural excellence. Born in Gateshead, Mick has been a councillor since 1986, representing the inner city ward of Saltwell. Before becoming Leader, he was Deputy Leader of the Council. He was also a Senior Lecturer in Photography and Head of Digital Imaging at Northumbria University and he previously held posts in most sectors of education, including class teacher in a special school. Before that, he worked in both private and public sectors, including a period as a Management Services Officer in industry and in London’s Hospital Service.
