Outside of A Dog

Paperbacks and other books by artists

27 September 2003 - 30 May 2004

“Outside of a dog a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.” Groucho Marx

This changing exhibition presents a diverse overview of books by artists from 1950 to the present, shown alongside a selection of related artworks by: David Hammons, John Latham, Helgi Thorgils Fridjonsson, Marijke van Warmerdam and Laurence Weiner.

The books are created by artists rather than being books about artists. This exhibition includes older books borrowed from individuals and institutions, generally exhibited under glass, while new books still in print are available for handling.

The exhibition is guest curated by Clive Phillpot and the publications are selected by a group of invited artists, critics, historians, curators and collectors from countries around the world as far afield as Hungary, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands and the USA.

Individuals who made selections include György Galántai, Skuta Helgasson, Martha Hellion, Márton Koppány, Maurizio Nannucci, Harry Ruhé, Jan Voss, Lawrence Weiner and Mami Yoshimoto.
