BALTIC is joining the Artworks conversation with over 1000 people over a 10 day period celebrating the practice of artists who work in participatory settings. Artists Selina Thompson and Christine Egan Fowler will critically reflect on the embedded nature of their art practice within different participatory settings, followed by a chaired critical conversation.

Selina Thompson’s work is playful, participatory and intimate, focused on the politics of identity, and how this defines our bodies, lives and environments. She has made work for pubs, cafes, hairdressers, toilets, and sometimes even galleries and theatres. She is currently in the middle of developing two new projects: the first exploring black identity within the UK and further afield and the second looking at unemployment and job centres.

Christine Egan Fowler is an artist teacher at Royal Grammar School, Newcastle. Her work is about memory, she creates and renews connections with forgotten aspects of her past; painting using materials which have a particular significance for her, such as washing powder, bleach and beeswax mixed with pigment. The materials she uses often have a resonant smell that helps instant recall.

Performance is also an important part of her work. Christine is interested in how performance can offer people a different insight into her work as well as a way of involving them and building collective memories.

Christine was awarded the BALTIC Artist Teacher Award 2012/13, selected by Godfrey Worsdale, and graduated from the MA Fine Art and Education, delivered by Northumbria University in partnership with BALTIC.
