Description |
In 1837 The Cornfield by John Constable became the first of the artist's works to enter the national collection and today is one of his most famous and best-loved paintings. A mezzotint of the painting was published by David Lucas in 1834 and since then its fame has been spread by reproductions of every kind, and it has appeared on an extraordinary variety of domestic objects- plates, tiles, tapestries, thimbles, biscuit tins, fire screens, wallpapers, clocks and cushions. The image has thus become widely disseminated in many homes and is familier to people who may not know of the original or who painted it. |
