Barnaby Furnas: Recent Paintings and Watercolours: BALTIC Press Release
Publication Date Apr 2005
Abstract

BALTIC is pleased to present an exhibition of bright, intensely coloured paintings by American artist Barnaby Furnas. The presentation brings to BALTIC the extraordinary energy of the artists’ explosive approach, in an exhibition of recent paintings and watercolours, from 16 April until 19 June. Furnas’ work depicts grand themes of love, death and conflict and his imagery evokes 21st Century fantasies and nightmares, where images of violence and war are presented alongside those of mass gatherings and celebration. In a highly individual style that has been likened to that of the Italian Futurists, Furnas’ paintings cleverly combine imagery depicting violence, destruction and spilt blood, revealing the mayhem and madness of conflict and war, with an aesthetic influenced by recent cinematic special effects and video game animation.
