Bettina Pousttchi’s photo installation of 970 individual posters attached to the exterior walls of the temporary art gallery on the site of the recently demolished Palace of the Republic in Berlin creates the impression of a miniature version of the former East German ceremonial building. The feeling of déjà vu evoking memories of the former building and the visual confusion is created through image processing. Digitally created lines are reminiscent of closed-circuit camera footage or a secret peek through closed blinds. Pousttchi’s staged photographs reflect on the individual’s faculty of memory and the suggestive role that the medium of photography plays in it. |
