Blueprint #344

On the cover of this issue we feature UNStudio's new, undulating Arnhem Central station, inspired by the founders Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos' ongoing fascination with the twisted shape of the Möbius Strip. Elsewhere in the magazine, we meet London-based designer Lee Broom, whose background in theatre and fashion has gone on to influence his product and furniture designs, as well as Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates whose latest socially engaging urban intervention could be found in Bristol, the UK's first city to be crowned a European Green Capital, and also profiled in this issue. Internationally, we take a moment to pause and reflect back on New York's infamous High Line with its creator Diller Scofidio + Renfro, travel to Shenzhen's Urbanism/Architecture Bi-City Biennale, look at an unusual project in a rural Austrian village that tasked seven internationally renowned architects, including Smiljan Radic and Sou Fujimoto, with creating a bus stop each, and take a peek inside Airbnb's new HQ in San Francisco. Back in England, we look at how WilkinsonEyre and Bell Phillips Architects are transforming four redundant gasholders in King's Cross into apartments and a park, hear how Croydon is turning itself around and putting plans into action, and reflect on the work of artist Alexander Calder as a major new retrospective opens at the Tate Modern. We also have a new bi-monthly residential focus, starting in this issue with a look at a number of creative ideas that seek to solve the housing shortage in London, from floating homes on the capital's network of canals to a megacity in the suburbs.
