Description With a cover showing Toyo Ito’s VivoCity in Singapore and a feature on Gymbox by Ben Kelly Design, this month’s issue presents a startling juxtaposition of urban spaces that demonstrates how architecture can reveal the values of a city. As Peter Kelly reports, a history of redundant and uninspired architecture in Singapore is being transformed with over-the-top projects by Toyo Ito, Will Alsop, and Zaha Hadid. Ito’s VivoCity shopping centre imbues a world of consumerism and trade with an ideology of dynamism, integrating the insulated mall with a public art–filled landscape. In London, Vicky Richardson visits a fomer Lumiere Cinema, which Ben Kelly Design has just converted into a new gym. Unlike Ito’s sterile and white shopping centre, BKD embraces urban grit, channelling a rough-and-tumble aesthetic into a cacophonous environment of black, silver, and yellow. The surrealist influence in these projects is continued in Neil Bingham’s report on the V&A’s exhibition Surreal Things, and Caroline Roux’s interview with Droog-founder Renny Ramakers, illustrating how design constantly blends found conditions with subconscious influences.
