Publication Date Dec 2009
Description Blueprint’s December issue centres around the theme of Man and Machine, culminating in the launch of our new back-page feature. Replacing the hugely successful Paper City, which has just been the subject of an exhibition at the Royal Academy, we will now be inviting architects, designers and artists to visualist the relationship between human beings and technology. As Vicky Richardson argues, it is a subject that has fascinated creative brains since the industrial revolution, and the first in the series has been created by architect Friend and Company. The cover story is Tim Abrahams’ feature on Liege’s high speed rail terminal, which finds Santiago Calatrava at his best: the building is both monumental and also one of his most elegant works. Yet it also symbolises Belgium’s inspiring commitment to high-speed rail and infrastructure. Graphic designer Ken Garland asks why ergonomics (sometimes defined as the science of the design of equipment) has been forgotten and calls for a campaign against ‘the many abuses in society resulting from the inhuman design of machines’. French architect Patrick Bouchain is interviewed about his 30 year struggle to break down the barriers between art, architecture and the general public. Isabelle Chaise meets the well established agitateur to find his determination to bring a moral conscience to architecture undiminished. Production designer Nelson Lowry talks to Peter Kelly about the inspirations and techniques that saw the realisation of the unique hand-crafted aesthetic of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox. Also in this issue: Alistair Donald questions whether Freiberg is an exemplar city of Urbanism; Gian Luca Amadei reports on Formtexx, a new venture by surface design specialist Barron Gould; Blueprint bring you the best examples from the most successful shows at LDF and 100% design; Reviews include Ed Ruscha – Fifty years of Painting, Design in Britain by Deyan Sudjic and the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent.
