Description This month’s Blueprint cover features Allford Hall Monaghan Morris’ Barking Central regeneration scheme. The project has been completed against a backdrop of political unrest in the run up to the Elections and the struggle between Labour MP Margaret Hodge and BNP leader Nick Griffin. Tim Abrahams reports on Barking Central’s role in highlighting the unrealised potential of affordable housing in the UK. In Comment, Keith Priest continues to explore the complex relationship between politicians and architects. While Peter Kelly speaks to internationally acclaimed artist Diango Hernandez about his impulsive drawings and improvised sculptures, some of which will be exhibited in the recently re-opened Hayward Gallery in London. Stephen Zacks looks at the purpose-built Media Production Center for Columbia College in Chicago for which architect Studio Gang has used direct references to specific directors and film-makers to create a tailored and inspiring environment for students. Owen Pritchard visits the Centre Pompidou-Metz, one in a series of satellite galleries being built across the country. Situated outside Paris, the impressive undulating gallery has been designed by Shigeru Ban, Jean de Gastines and Philip Gumuchdjian. In Produce this month we cover an experimental collaboration between designers in Berlin and London who have developed unique products and a specific brief through the medium of Skype. Gian Luca Amadei writes about the Campana Brothers’ and Studio Job’s innovative techniques of transposing 3D designs on to 2D prints for Nodus’ new series of rugs. Also in this issue: The Surreal House at the Barbican, The architecture of post-industrialist Detroit now stands a warning to other cities illustrated in two new books, The Ruins of Detroit and Detroit Disassembled; Penny Sparke explores the focus of TV show and accompanying book The Genius of Design. Reviews include the documentary film about architect Norman Foster; The Relics of Old London at the Royal Academy of Arts; the Design Museum looks at sustainable design in modern cities with the Sustainable Futures: Can Design Make a Difference exhibition. Plus much more.
