Elizabeth Black: A Reading/Reading [of] the Art

This cross-disciplinary performance explores audience engagement with contemporary art through interpretive dance. The dancers seek to claim transitory ownership of the space and the audience gaze, with a range of work from rehearsed to improvised performances. The project culminates in a live art piece, which embodies Peter J. Evans' artworks, through the language of physical movement and occupancy of space.

Currently in the first year of BxNU Master of Fine Arts programme at BALTIC 39, Elizabeth Black is a performance and visual artist exploring notions of performativity, and the role of the artist — as a facilitator of events, happenings, and the discourse that surrounds this.

In collaboration with dance students from the North East: Sadie Brooks, Annie Burke, Jess Gibbs, Natasha Reay, and Katie Smith.

Julie L Bemment: Moments of Sight

Presented as a slideshow/video, Moments of Sight uses the flexible characteristics of black electrical tape, combined with interior architecture, in order to create intersections of time and space. The work engages in a relationship to Minimalism, transforming towards a constructed form, exploring ideas around movement, temporality, and visual illusion.

Currently in the first year of the BxNU Master of Fine Arts programme at BALTIC 39, Julie L Bemment works across painting, sculpture, photography and installation. Exploring human perception, time, and attitudes to physical and pictorial space, Bemment investigates the stranger qualities of our vision in order to understand our relationship with the world around us.
