16 April 2018 at BALTIC 39
The event took place within Setting the Table, an exhibition-in-the-making curated by Jason E Bowman.
How do current UK art institutions – from publicly-funded galleries and museums to private foundations, self-initiated artist-run spaces and creative community organisations – serve their constituencies? Who are their constituencies? How are decisions made? How are they governed?
What roles might arts institutions play in the development of more just, equitable societies – or is this not their role? As the UK prepares to depart from Europe, and as arts institutions of all scales face increasing financial pressure, how might art’s organisation be unlocked imaginatively?
Guest speakers:
- Jason E Bowman, artist and MFA: Fine Art Programme Leader, Valand Academy, University of Gothenburg
- Julie Crawshaw, Lecturer in Material Culture, Northumbria University
- Charlotte Gregory, Director, The NewBridge Project, Newcastle
- Mark Jackson, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art Critical Theory and Curatorial Practices, Northumbria University, curator and co-founder of IMT Gallery, London, and occasional collaborator with Plastique Fantastique, NEUSCHLOSS and Blue Mountain.
