This highly innovative and original book documents the dynamic multidisciplinary art group Chicks on Speed's recent Objeckt Instuments project and exhibition at Dundee Contemporary Arts, their first solo show in the UK. Chicks on Speed (COS) are an ever-changing multidisciplinary art group who apply punk-inspired DIY ethic to interrogate the boundaries of art, craft, fashion and music.
Amongst various themes, the book takes its inspiration from the visibility of women artists in early modernist performances C.o.S have a particular interest in the Bauhaus focused on ideas around industrial craft developments versus present craft, fashion, art processes combined with technology. The working process shown will combine traditional techniques; shoe and fashion tailoring, tapestry, weaving, screen-printing alongside the development of new research in technical innovation.
This artistic endeavor is the result of collaborations between international artists, scientists, and designers, including Turner Prize-winner Douglas Gordon. These artistic dialogues, technical innovations, and craft experiments have produced fantastical creations, including a high-heeled shoe guitar, a cigar-box orchestra, and a theremin tapestry, all documented in lush color-from developmental inception to public display.
The book includes an introduction by Judith Winter and a revealing conversation with Chicks on Speed about their art and process. melissa logan and alex murray-leslie are the prime members of Chicks on Speed. Judith Winter is head of arts, Dundee Contemporary Art, Scotland. |
