Description

Artist event in connection with the exhibition: PETER J. EVANS Across islands, divides
Thursday 12 November 2015, BALTIC's project space at BALTIC 39.

Artists James Jarvis and Ant Macari; two individuals who continue to inspire Evans' own work will discuss the significance of drawing as a means of understanding.

Since 2002 drawing has been the backbone of Evans' practice, utilised as a way of representing the distinct pathways of matter as they travel through time and space. Brought together here to discuss the significance of drawing as a means of understanding are two individuals who continue to inspire Evans' own work.

James Jarvis is an artist and illustrator who has carved out a unique vision, most notably in his recent Spheric Dialogues series in which he drew a philosophy comic strip everyday. His utilisation of these spheres as characters with which to explore ideas has a directness leading to depth, that is both enjoyable and thought provoking. Jarvis has recently shown at HHH gallery (Tokyo) and produced illustrations for Nike, Decent Skateboards and Air France.

Newcastle-based artist Ant Macari is interested in the ways in which we use visual codes to signify abstract ideas, from medieval heraldry to the mystical geometries of Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Working in a range of media, pattern, mathematics and classical references are intertwined with a dry wit and sense of absurdity to ask questions about the hierarchies of the visual world through them. Macari has previously had solo exhibitions at BALTIC and has performed at Tate Modern. Commissions include Project Space Leeds, Locus+, Side, the Grundy Art Gallery and Leeds Art Gallery.
