David Maljkovic: Sources in the Air

Publication Date Mar 2013

David Maljkovic (born Rijeka, Croatia in 1973) is known for his distinctive films and installations exploring place and history. Using archives of modernist forms and specific avant-garde histories, Maljkovic's work emerges from the turbulent recent history of his home country. His expansive approach encompasses sculpture, collage, photography and film in meticulously researched projects such as Scenes for New Heritage 2004-6 (a trilogy of films), Retired Form 2008 and Images with Their Own Shadows 2008. Sources in the Air includes work from the last ten years. Devised as an installation that subtly disrupts the exhibition format, atmospherically and architecturally charged structures both contain and interpret Maljkovic's work, examining different forms of display in response to the architecture of BALTIC. The film examines the development of the exhibition from its original presentation in Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven to its unique configuration at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead.
