Erwin Wurm

New Sculpture

5 July 2006 - 10 October 2006

Erwin Wurm, one of Austrias premier contemporary artists, continues his exploration of sculpture through differing media, in an exhibition presented both inside and outside of BALTIC. Two new works will be exhibited alongside Fat House (2003) and Truck (2005) - both previously unseen in the UK. Fat House takes the form of a life-size fantasy, cartoon house and is part of the Fat series first started in 2003. The series questions what minimum characteristics an object requires to be considered sculpture. On the other hand, Truck (2005), takes the form of a vehicle curved up and fixed to the wall of the gallery space. Both works transform everyday objects into sculpture with humorous investigation. Wurm, who lives and works in New York and Vienna, liberates objects from their familiar context and gives them new meaning. Objects acquire illogical shapes and appearances which raise fundamental questions about art, culture and the truth we take for granted.
