Abstract To undersatnd the role of design in Britain's future we must first look to the past. It's hardly new. The potential of design to help secure our future has been recognised for at least 150 years. Select Committees of the 1830s and 40s, a Royal Comission on design in the 1880s, initiatives during and immeadiately after two world wars and moves by the Thatcher government all sought to strengthen British business with a liberal coating of 'design'.
