Description

In 2018 this collection was displayed in BALTIC Library in connection with the Idea of North exhibition (Level 4, 11 May – 30 September 2018). It consists of 6 x A1 boards showing the history of Gateshead Music Collective. Each board contains photos, flyers and hand-written text. The boards are mounted back-to-back inside 3 hanging perspex displays, so they can be viewed from both sides. These perspex displays are not intrinsic to the Gateshead Music Collective archive, they were used for the display at BALTIC and will remain in place for protection in storage.

Also deposited is the 33rpm vinyl album, 'Tracks from the Station' and the 45rpm single, 'Better Than a Poke in the Eye'.

The record could be listened to by visitors within the Idea of North exhibition, a video 'The Garage' was also shown on a monitor within the exhibition and can be viewed here:

The following text was written for the display within Idea of North exhibition in 2018:

"Around 1980 the punk band Total Chaos, The Model Workers and other local bands such as The Reptiles started a venue called The Garage, in Bells Court, Newcastle. When threatened with closure, the bands, who were mainly from Gateshead, worked with community and youth workers and The Prince's Trust to lobby Gateshead Council to try to find a dedicated performance and rehearsal space.

The old Police Social Club on Swinburne Street, Gateshead, was identified as a possible venue. These musicians formed themselves into the Gateshead Music Collective, and began weekly meetings in Gateshead Library. With help from Gateshead Library Services, The Collective successfully applied to The Prince's Trust for funding to buy equipment and refurbish the newly named Station, which became an independent live music venue and rehearsal space from approximately 1981-85".
