Plans are progressing for the Town Centre Gateshead Council has agreed a masterplan that sets out how we want to transform and rejuvenate Gateshead town centre. This will now be used to consult local businesses and residents.
The town centre strategy is the result of over three years of planning and consultation that has seen local people, businesses, and design and property consultants involved in shaping the future of the town centre. There are a lot of challenges ahead if we are to turn the centre into a vibrant, attractive, and sustainable area with its own distinctive identity.
We need to:
* Improve the way it looks by introducing good quality buildings and public spaces * Resolve problems of vacant and old properties
* Introduce good quality shops and offices * Improve on the limited range of facilities
* Reduce high volumes of traffic through the town centre
* Make it more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists
But, if we build on the town centre's strengths - its good central location and transport links, easy access to new leisure and cultural developments and its historic and listed buildings - the potential to improve is enormous. We'll be consulting with local businesses and residents on the proposals and you can check here for future developments. |
