This publication focuses on Gerard Byrne's video piece Jielemeguvvie guvvie sjisjnjeli: Film inside an image (2016). Filmed in a Swedish natural history museum, Byrne's film studies a 19th-century diorama of wildlife. An immersive representation of Nordic wilderness, populated by taxidermied birds and animals, the 19th-century diorama is a form of representation that anticipates the invention of both photography and cinema. Byrne's video work thus stages a confrontation between the photographic image and
the forms of representation that it supplanted and raises questions as
to what comes next. |
