Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Angel Row Gallery, Nottingham, 16 September-28 October 2006.
Helen Maurer’s projections contain illusory devices using light and mirrors, sending fragments of images cascading around the gallery. Merging real life and fiction, her worlds remain distant and inaccessible, echoing memory. The gallery viewer plays an unconscious part in this illusion, human presence erasing and distorting images on entering the space.
“Much of the subject matter for my work is drawn from remembered places. I now live on a boat and I have found that this has informed the content and visual qualities within my current practice”.
‘I work mainly with glass, light and film, to create installations for exhibition and site-specific projects. My pieces often evolve through experimentation with these materials and processes, which then inform my ideas.’
