Description

Iceland’s barren landscape, its volcanoes, waterfalls, winds and cold never cease to fascinate. Nature’s elemental force creates harsh conditions for Iceland’s inhabitants. Their relationship with nature is characterised by both love and respect: qualities that have always coloured Icelandic culture.

Iceland’s art can be described as stripped-down, imaginative visual poetry, a counterpoint to the unparalleled nature that is hard to compete against. Both the forces of nature and the human existence that is lived under its harsh conditions are reflected in sparse, but grand, visual language.

The exhibition is a comprehensive presentation of Icelandic art. The emphasis is on contemporary art, but includes traces leading us back to its historical roots.
