Jane and Louise Wilson

A Free and Anonymous Monument

13 September 2003 - 30 November 2003

Jane and Louise Wilson’s work examines the psychology and architecture of buildings. The Newcastle-born artists work together on their video installations and photographs which typically explore the relationships between people and architectural space, particularly those spaces that are concealed, secret or somehow forgotten.

A Free and Anonymous Monument is a multi-screen film installation, commissioned by BALTIC in partnership with Film and Video Umbrella. The exhibition presents one of the most ambitious works by Jane and Louise Wilson to date.

The film-based work focuses on a series of regional sites – all significant symbols of regeneration – to explore the process of reinvention undergone by former industrial areas in the North East through the use of architecture and its automated history.

Sites filmed included Pasmore’s Apollo Pavilion in Peterlee; Owen Luder’s Gateshead Carpark; Atmel, North Tyneside; Cummins engine-works in Darlington and an offshore oil rig.
