‘If one wishes to devote one’s books to the true benefit of one’s country, one must write them abroad.’

Written whilst living in Venice, Jeremy Millar has created a new book that appears to be based on Rousseau’s Confessions. We learn that the writer has visited Italy before; the book is a recollection of a previous trip. The journey is punctuated with outrageous incidents and, as the narrative progresses, the actions of the narrator become more and more crude. Confessions is an account of the transformation of faux-naïveté and embarrassment into ambition and display that is compact, funny and troubling.
