John Akomfrah: Purple

John Akomfrah: Purple
Library Shelf Location 18.AKOM
Publication Date 2017

This illustrated publication accompanies John Akomfrah's solo exhibition in the Barbican Curve gallery.

British artist and filmmaker, John Akomfrah creates his most ambitious piece to date - an immersive six-channel video installation addressing climate change, human communities and the wilderness. At a time when, according to the UN, greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are at their highest levels in history, Akomfrah’s Purple brings a multitude of ideas into conversation. These include animal extinctions, the memory of ice, the plastic ocean and global warming. Akomfrah has combined hundreds of hours of archival footage with newly shot film and a hypnotic sound score to produce the video installation.

The accompanying publication includes a newly commissioned text by Kass Banning, Associate Professor of Cinema Studies at University of Toronto, as well as an interview with the artist by writer and broadcaster Ekow Eshun.

This is the sixth title in a publication series by Barbican Art Gallery that focuses on the Curve exhibition programme. Design by Zak Group.
