Jonathan Meese: Drawings (DR. NO SUBSCRIBES TO YOUR WAR BONDS (private), DR. SPOCK evolutionizes

This volume offers a selection of hitherto unpublished drawings by German performance and installation artist Jonathan Meese (born 1970). The collection includes all phases of his work, plus a discussion of his recent controversial performance piece featuring the Nazi salute.

Jonathan Meese is no stranger to Hamburg. About 10 years ago he was seen at the Deichtorhallen with an extensive and impressive complex solo show.In contrast, his recent presentation at the 8th Salon was specific to his work in the medium of drawing.

On this occasion, visitors enjoyed the art of Jonathan Meese in small format, built from only a few strokes, and with a few words, without impasto or performative impetus. Precisely in this way, on the thin skin of the paper and in simple lines, appear his ‘characters’. These works demonstrate Meese’s constant sense of humor, with unwavering attention to the world.

Published with Harpune Verlag on the occasion of the exhibition Drawings (DR. NO SUBSCRIBES TO YOUR WAR BONDS (private), DR. SPOCK evolutionizes at 8 Salon, Hamburg, 9 September – 4 October 2015.
