Study for Birth 2 1981–3
Spray paint, ink, and embroidery on fabric Courtesy Through the Flower; Salon 94, New York; and Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco

To produce the Birth Project 1980–5, Judy Chicago collaborated with more than 150 needle-workers from across the US, Canada and New Zealand. Needle-workers, who submitted applications to work on the project, demonstrated their skills on a sampler Chicago designed. Those selected worked individually, or in small groups, on pieces designed and sent to them by the artist. Regular reviews were conducted by post, in person, at Chicago’s studio, and at regional meetings across the US. In addition to working on the designs, needle- workers agreed that any communications they had with Chicago could be used in the Birth Project exhibitions, some of which are included in the exhibition here.
