Autobiography of a Year 1993–4
Mixed media on Magnani paper

Autobiography of a Year 1993–4, is a series of 140 works on paper that chronicle the ups and downs of a year marked by both personal and professional hardship for Chicago. It is a very personal work, but one which weaves the singular and ordinary with universal or shared experience. Human emotion is explored in gestures and accompanied by descriptions written in Chicago’s own hand. The subject matter covers violence, anxiety, despair and experiences from the everyday to the emotionally significant like the death of a parent. One of the first drawings in the series annotated ‘all the colours of the year’, depicts an index that codes specific colours to emotional states. The coding allows the work to be easily navigated, giving the artist some agency over the emotional narrative of her journey.
