The End: A Meditation on Death and Extinction 2015–7 Prismacolour on black Arches paper Courtesy of Salon 94, New York and Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco
The End: A Meditation on Death and Extinction is the most recent work in the exhibition. The series, as many of Chicago’s works, is personal and direct but universal in theme. It has three parts: the five stages of grief; Chicago’s reflections on her own death; and a catalogue of species endangered and facing extinction due to human greed. This final part explores the state of emergency the planet is in today. It encourages us to think about the devastating effects of extracting natural resources from our planet for profit, whilst highlighting animal suffering due to human greed. The work is intended to shock us into protest, into action against the larger structures of oppression and towards the pursuit of global justice. |
