Description

Art can touch you in many ways. Kiasma’s collection exhibition for 2016 explores the relationship between the viewer and the artwork through the senses and physicality. Art challenges us to step closer and experience it in different ways other than just seeing. Contemporary art forces its way into our consciousness not only through our eyes, but also through our ears, fingertips and nostrils – it gets under our skin, so to speak. Named simply by using emoji symbols, the exhibition highlights the importance of emotions and memories as part of the art experience. In addition to essays discussing the themes of the collection exhibition, this publication features the thoughts of Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa and an article by David Elliott that sheds light on personal history.

Articles by Eija Aarnio, David Elliott, Saara Hacklin, Esa Kirkkopelto, Arja Miller. Edited by Saara Hacklin.

The exhibition presents works by 27 artists from Kiasma’s permanent collections. The chosen works invite and challenge us to experience them with all our senses. Even art that we primarily consume with our eyes can speak to our other senses: It can produce an illusion of tactility or movement, or even make our mouth water.

We live in an emotion-glutted age. Our culture and media are saturated with tears, rage and pumped-up buzz. All things are expressed in emotive terms. Art, too, can elicit powerful responses, yet it can also offer a subtler experience. Not everything has to be felt to the max – sometimes it’s enough to quietly listen.

The artists of the exhibition are Malin Ahlsved, Petri Ala-Maunus, Roma Auskalnyte, Niran Baibulat, Saara Ekström, Brian Eno, Anna Estarriola, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Sigurdur Gudmundsson, Kaarina Haka, Jenni Hiltunen, Jouna Karsi, Sari Koski-Vähälä, Juul Kraijer, Tuomas A. Laitinen, Olli Lyytikäinen, Nabb+Teeri – Janne Nabb & Maria Teeri, Jaakko Niemelä, Pekka Niskanen, Anna Retulainen, Hanna Saarikoski, Carolina Sandell, Christian Skeel & Morten Skriver, Nestori Syrjälä and Anne Tompuri.
