KIENHOLZ at BALTIC

Publication Date 2005
Description

Documentary produced by BALTIC Archive in 2005 to coincide with the major retrospective exhibition KIENHOLZ at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.

Edward Kienholz (1927-1994) and Nancy Reddin Kienholz (born 1943) are two American artists who have created an extraordinary body of work. Their sculptures, drawings and tableaux are brought together in the first major exhibition of its kind in the UK for over thirty years. Presented in the Level 3 and 4 spaces the show demonstrates the remarkable range and depth of the artists’ creative concerns, and brings together several of the larger than life environments meticulously re-installed here at BALTIC, with early conceptual drawings and statements from the 1960s. The exhibition draws on work from 1963 to 2004, beginning with Edward (Ed) Kienholz’s solo projects. From 1972 onwards the works are produced jointly with his wife Nancy, who has continued to make work following Ed’s death in 1994.
