For more than twenty years, Liz Rideal has used photo-booth imagery as the foundation for precisely constructed collages. By embracing the inherent limits of the photo-booth (its rigid focus, lighting, and shutter speed) Rideal has turned the machine into a remarkably versatile tool. Both the booth and the tiny strips themselves offer a tightly constrained environment in which Rideal unleashes the exuberance and vitality of curling fabric, twisting roots, and unfolding leaves and flowers. She equates this process of control and chaos to paint exploding in a contained space. The outcome are serenely regimented yet joyfully turbulent assemblies, comprised of anywhere from four to thousands of individual images. |
