Mapping Art South Asia: A visual and cultural dialogue between Britain and South Asia
Library Shelf Location 15b.SSSH
Publication Date 2006
Description This book is the direct result of the groundbreaking cross-art form project ArtSouthAsia – the first international programme of visual culture from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka – conceived by Shisha, the international agency for South Asian crafts and visual arts, in July 2002. ArtSouthAsia was developed in partnership with Lee Avison (Gallery Oldham), Catherine Dickinson and Kate Day (Manchester Art Gallery), James Green (Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston) and Mathew H. Clough (the University of Liverpool Art Gallery). The ArtSouthAsia programme marked the first ever attempt to showcase the visual cultures of South Asia, as part of the Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme in the north of England. The other key feature of this project was to generate a dialogue with our nominated South Asian curators, all of who played a critical role in shaping the curatorial brief and delivering a remarkably outstanding event; exemplified by the Indian curator, Gulammohammed Sheikh who commented that, ‘the idea of hosting four exhibitions of South Asian nations was innovative and pioneering; considering such possibility does not exist in the regions concerned.’ (ArtSouthAsia Evaluation Report commissioned by Shisha, 2002)
