Description |
A fundamental problem that mankind has faced from time immemorial is made manifest in Maria Lassnig's art. It is the question of the image, the question of the visual on a fundamental level, in which the visible world can only partly be defined as the place of the visual.
What seems essential to Maria Lassnig is the recognition that the human body represents a medium that generates images. This catalogue follows the artist's oeuvre in a retrospective form, in representative and, in some cases, never-before shown examples from all of her creative periods and, as such, exemplarily traces developments in painting between abstract expressionism and newer figuration.
