Description |
This work contains essays by Penelope Curtis, and Roland Van de Sompel. Dutch artist, Mark Manders' first UK solo exhibition takes the form of an ambitious new commission for BALTIC. "Short Sad Thoughts" showcases work from Manders' ongoing exploration Self-Portrait as a Building, a project the artist has been working on since he was 18 years old. Manders uses clay, cast in bronze, painted to look like clay again, to represent the human and the animal, and uses readymade materials to make the environment or setting for his installations. His Self Portrait as a Building is not, however, an autobiographical site, but refers to a literary character invented by the artist, an imaginary double who lives in a logically designed and constructed world. |
