Sublime shots of large winter landscapes and a ballet of snow cats under the alpine night sky. Next to them, shovelling workers or images of masses of snow being carted away. For about ten years, the London-based photo artist Melanie Manchot has been dealing with the tourist infrastructure of winter sports resorts. At the invitation of the INN SITU series, she spent several weeks in the Vorarlberg village of Gaschurn. The village is located at about 1,000 metres above sea level in the Silvretta Montafon ski area.
The pictures for this book show the work behind the scenes of the mountain experience. Those hidden skills, activities and routines that make the winter landscape accessible to the guest. Melanie Manchot's view is not investigative or critical of tourism. The artist's attitude avoids any polemics and looks curiously, inquiringly at a contradictory phenomenon of our civilisation: the fascination of pristine natural spaces and the technical organisation of their accessibility.
