Gagosian Gallery is pleased to present a new publication in conjunction with Mike Kelley's first show with the gallery in New York devoted entirely to painting, Horizontal Tracking Shots. Kelley has devised a spatial push-pull effect through the arrangement of large polychrome panel-paintings and smaller framed canvases in this recent series, wherein painting represents a series of experiences akin to the movie camera gliding through space. Evoking modernist monochromes in the untitled colored reliefs as well as a domestic décor, base moldings lend an architectural quality recalling stage sets or theatrical spaces. In his smaller works, Kelley draws freely from a wide range of sources including elementary school textbook illustration, New Age painting, comic strips, and science-fiction. An interview between the artist and Ralph Rugoff is included. |
