Studer & van den Berg

Package Holiday

9 July 2005 - 4 September 2005

In their first UK exhibition Swiss artists Monica Studer and Christoph van den Berg brought the 19th century connection between English mountain climbers and Swiss alpine tourism into the digital age by creating an interactive portrayal of the mountain landscape remembered from their childhood holidays.

Visitors to the Level 2 gallery were greeted by a digital panorama that is the full height of the space. They could sit and enjoy the breathtaking view of the fictitious Gleissenhorn mountain region while their presence was captured by a live camera. The scene in the gallery was then broadcast online, at the artists’ ‘virtual hotel’: Vue Des Alpes. Package Holiday also included a weather webcam, as well as a life-sized projection of the Gleissenhorn waterfall. The artists created the works in this exhibition, not from photographs, but by modelling their memories using 3D software packages. Package Holiday was a new BALTIC commission.
