Peter J Evans: Broken Telephone

Publication Date Nov 2015
Description

Peter J Evans, talks about Broken Telephone, a sound work featuring Mark Fell, Laura Cannell and Rhodri Davies, comprised of sixteen tracks to be released as four 12" records.

Evans conceived of this work as a game between four participants, each making an original piece of music which travels round the other players, one after the other, each attempting to recreate from memory
what they've heard after just one listen.

Further Info

Laura Cannell is a highly acclaimed and innovative composer/performer. Laura is a self-taught fiddle player and studied recorder at London College of Music and the University of East Anglia. Using self-developed techniques of the "deconstructed bow" and "double-barrelled recorders", Cannell combines folk and medieval traditions with an improvisatory approach to create exploratory music that expands the no-man's land between the archaic and the innovative, transcending temporality in instantaneous compositions.

Playing harp, electric harp, and live-electronics, Rhodri Davies continues to challenge what a harp can do through a classically trained approach combined with improvisation. Davies was a prominent member of the London reductionist school of improvised music in the late 1990s / early 2000s. He has achieved critical success as a solo recording artist, contemporary composer, artist, orchestral player and session musician. His other activities and regular groups include a duo with John Butcher, Common Objects, HENOGLEDD, The Sealed Knot and a trio with John Tilbury and Michael Duch.

Peter J. Evans has been a successful artist, composer and technician for over twenty years, musically working in both solo form (nwavi, thx1742, athabasca, nebula boy) and collaboratively (with the band cumulonimbus, sessions with Metronomy and remixing Maximö Park). His practice is meticulous, meditative and research driven - often working in series over several years - often spanning multiple mediums. He has received several residencies including an Arts Council International Fellowship (Helsinki), an Amino programmed research placement (Beijing) and nominations for awards including The Northern Art Prize.

Mark Fell is a multidisciplinary artist based in Sheffield (UK). Fell is widely known for combining popular music styles, such as electronica and club musics, with more academic approaches to computer-based composition with a particular emphasis on algorithmic and mathematical systems. Since his early electronic music pieces Fell’s practice has expanded to include moving image works, sound and light installation, choregoraphy, critical texts and educational projects. Fell presented a solo exhibition at BALTIC 39 in 2013 and has presented work at prestigious international venues including: Hong Kong National Film archive, Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Laboral (XIxon), The Institute of Contemporary Art (London), Royal Festival Hall (London), The Serpentine (London), The Australian Centre For Moving Image, Artists Space (NYC), Issue Project Room (NYC), Corcoran (DC), Curtis R.Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (NY), Lampo/Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts (Chicago), Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (Karlsruhe), Hanger Biccoca (Milan) and others.
