Peter Liversidge: Proposals for Cardiff

Peter Liversidge: Proposals for Cardiff
Library Shelf Location 18.LIVE
Publication Date 2010
Description Every element in an exhibition of work by Peter Liversidge begins at the artist’s kitchen table with him sitting alone writing proposals on an old manual typewriter. These hand-typed pages present a wide range of possible and impossible ideas for performances, artworks and interventions in almost every conceivable medium. In a sense the first realisation of every work is in Liversidge’s head, then on the page, then in the mind of the reader, and finally (perhaps) as an object or happening. For Chapter, Liversidge has made 30 ‘Proposals for Cardiff’ – each of which was posted to the Gallery for consideration - and these framed letters are now displayed in the caffi bar area and feature in a new bookwork of the same name. The physical manifestation of some of these proposals includes the addition of Lancashire Plum Bread to our caffi menu; specially compiled music CDs for the bar; brilliant white bunting strung throughout the space and limited edition embossed money in our tills. Further proposals have been made real in our Gallery space. The major installation, Proposal No 10 (2010), features a forest of Black Walnut Trees. Here, this re-presented landscape offers a wry nod to the familiar icons of the movie Western and to our own nostalgic pre-conceptions of the epic proportions of that landscape which are humourously undermined by the artist’s play with scale, prop and location. The exhibition also features a pair of large-scale Winter Drawings, a new, site-specific wall drawing and a pair of Polaroid photographs taken on South Beach in Miami. In addition, Liversidge has built a cinema in the Gallery space. The cinema will screen three films a day at 10:30am, 2:30pm and 5:30pm. The films have been selected by friends and family of the artist and include, amongst others: The Third Man; G-Force; Driller Killer; Mon oncle; The Conversation, and The Deer Hunter. Film screening time and dates are available from the Gallery. Peter Liversidge is based in London and is represented by Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh (www.inglebygallery.com). Recent projects and exhibitions include ‘The Thrill of it All’, Ingleby Gallery, 2010; ‘Proposals for Liverpool’, Tate Gallery, 2008 and Jupiter Proposals (the newly opened sculpture park Jupiter Artland, 2009). Forthcoming projects include a major new work to be unveiled at Jupiter Artland in May 2010. Liversidge is also one of 8 artists selected to be part of a major research project and exhibition by the Architectural Association, London and the city of Venice, to be unveiled at the Venice Biennale in 2011.
