Description |
It is with great pleasure that BALTIC publishes this book to document Peninsula by Phyllida Barlow, a major new commission realised in 2004 for the level 4 gallery. There has been great excitment and anticipation surrounding the making of this exhibition, with a sense that the demands of the gallery space would provide Barlow with a remarkable opportunity for a new work to be presented to a wide audience. The resulting artwork, with its akward and demanding forms and suprising materials and methods, embodies the rigourous intelligence and invigorating intuition which has made working with the artist on this project such a delight.
The book includes photography of Peninsula as well as Barlow's own research material: photography and drawing. The interview explores the artist's processes to realise the new work, and essay by Sally O'Reilly interrogates in greater depth Barlow's insistence on the work's impact on the viewer in the gallery in a physical sense, without interruption of meaning. |
