Description Born in Newcastle, I spent my first twelve years roaming the blackened streets of the city and exploring the Tyne. As a child, I was struck by the fact that the beautiful buildings of Grey Street, Grainger Street, Blackfriars etc, had been built using 'black' stone! It came as a shock to discover that the stone hadn't always been that colour but was the result of Newcastle's industrial heritage. It also came as a surprise that many of my family, friends and colleagues had little or no idea of the city's remarkable history. From the historic quayside to the elegant and graceful buildings of the city centre, Newcastle has always been a source of inspiration for my art. I decided to combine my love of painting with my interest in history and produce a book that I hope is not only an interesting light read but pleasing to the eye.
