Description

The book is dedicated to Shen Wei , a Chinese artist who can be considered one of the protagonists of contemporary performance. Its originality consists in escaping every rigid thematic and geographical boundary, drawing instead on different disciplines and moving continuously, from a physical and cultural point of view, between East and West. In addition to being a choreographer and dancer in fact, Shen Wei is a painter, director and photographer, and is particularly expert in site specific creations that intertwine dance and visual arts in particular environments. The volume documents a project that, in 2011, saw him engaged at the Maramotti Collection and at the Valli Theater in Reggio Emilia: a striking photographic portfolio in black and white tells the performances, interpreted by the twelve dancers of his company. In the long conversation with Leonetta Bentivoglio welcomed in the book, Shen Wei recounts his origins and his creative path , focusing on the highlights of his career, from the foundation of the theater company in New York in 2005, to one of the co-prints studied for the opening of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Shen Wei was born in Hunan, China. He studied Chinese opera from the age of nine. From 1984 to 1989, he worked for the Hunan State Xian Opera Company. From 1991 to 1994 he was among the first members - dancer and choreographer - of the Guangdong Modern Dance Company, the first modern dance company in China. After obtaining a scholarship from the Nikolais / Louis Dance Lab, Shen Wei moved to New York City in 1995 where, in 2000, he founded the Shen Wei Dance Arts. Awarded numerous awards, he created one of the choreographies of the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. As an independent visual artist, Shen Wei is also a painter and designer. His paintings have been exhibited in New York and Hong Kong.
