Description

Record Store Day at BALTIC 39
Saturday 18 April / 12.00-18.00
BALTIC’s project space at BALTIC 39, Newcastle

To mark the eighth Record Store Day in the UK, BALTIC 39 hosts a celebration of the art of music.

The afternoon begins with live cutting of 78 discs with Lathe Revival and invited musicians. The dapper DJ78 follows with an atmospheric interlude not to be missed, using 1930’s wind-up gramophones and a specially curated selection of 78rpm shellac discs. To round off the day, Harry Pearson, Mr Drayton, and Paul Harvey will be joined in a conversation about the significance and history of record collecting.

Mr Drayton is currently enjoying his fifth golden year of Mr Drayton’s Record Player, a celebration of the classic vinyl album. A BBC Newcastle producer, comedian and entertainer, Mr Drayton is a rabid music fan who, for a gentleman of his advanced years, spends far too much time and money in the pursuit of vinyl joy.

Paul Harvey is a punk musician and Stuckist artist. His paintings draw on pop art, images from his own past and the work of Alphonse Mucha. He is drawn to Czech art and culture and as a consequence of this, he currently has a solo show at Oko Gallery, Opava, Czech Republic. As a guitarist in post-punk bands including Happy Refugees, Nancy Bone and the legendary Penetration, with a back catalogue of collector’s items, Harvey is currently working on several vinyl releases due out this year. The original single from Happy Refugees was exhibited at the Haywood Gallery exhibition, SOMEDAY ALL THE ADULTS WILL DIE! Punk Graphics 1971-1984, in 2014.

Harry Pearson’s life was changed forever by reading the first issue of punk fanzine Sniffing Glue and, ten years later, the issue of football fanzine When Saturday Comes that had a joke about Glenn Hoddle on the cover. Born and brought up on Teesside, he has written ten non-fiction books – including The Far Corner and Slipless in Settle – and over 800 columns for the Guardian.
