Description

Record Store Day at BALTIC 39
Saturday 18 April / 12.00-18.00
BALTIC’s project space at BALTIC 39, Newcastle

To mark the eighth Record Store Day in the UK, BALTIC 39 hosts a celebration of the art of music.

The afternoon begins with live cutting of 78 discs with Lathe Revival and invited musicians. The dapper DJ78 follows with an atmospheric interlude not to be missed, using 1930’s wind-up gramophones and a specially curated selection of 78rpm shellac discs. To round off the day, Harry Pearson, Mr Drayton, and Paul Harvey will be joined in a conversation about the significance and history of record collecting.

Lathe Revival is building a living archive of contemporary roots music using carefully restored vintage equipment. Led by Lorna Fulton and Gary Malkin the project is a result of their shared passion for roots music, and the desire to bring early recording technologies back to life. Working on a 1938 Presto recording lathe, they record contemporary musicians who are inspired by music of the past. Musicians are given a 10″ lacquer disc to cut their 78 record live in one take, using a single microphone. The audio mix is achieved through performance and positioning. The result is an authentic recording that is difficult, if not impossible to achieve with digital software. latherevival.com/

Performers include:
Martin Stephenson (of The Daintees)
Holy Moly and the Crackers
Hokum Hotshots
Holcombe Family String Band

DJ78 uses a matching pair of 1930’s HMV 102 wind-up gramophones and an expertly-curated selection of 78rpm shellac discs to provide atmosphere and entertainment in equal measure. Looking dapper in his vintage tweeds or dinner suit, and playing an eclectic selection of popular music from the dance bands of the 20’s through to the rock’n’roll pioneers of the 50’s, he makes any social gathering that little bit classier. DJ78 is a regular studio guest on the Cerys Matthews show on BBC 6 Music and has previously appeared on BBC TVs ‘Working Lunch’ programme and with Rob Da Bank on BBC Radio 1. He has performed at London Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, The Goodwood Revival, Bestival, Latitude, Llama Festival, Camp Bestival, Shepherds Bush Empire, Ulster Hall in Belfast, The Edinburgh TV Festival, Dublin Arts Festival and at more weddings than you can shake a stick at! dj78.co.uk
