The pureculture project Rigas modes explores the aesthetics of Riga's pensioners style. Riga is the capital of Latvia, a new member of the European Union. The rapid transition from a welfare state under Soviet occupation to post-Soviet capitalism has left senior citizens, more than 1/3 of Latvia's population, with survival pensions of only $100 per month. In combination, perhaps, with some deeper-rooted patterns of behavior, this situation has caused most pensioners to wear practically the same clothes as they did 20, 30, or more years ago. |
