Artist in residence, Samar Maakaron’s work as a designer focuses on areas where design, identity, society, art and politics intersect, interact and converge. In her native Lebanon, Maakaron has worked to develop platforms for participation in the arts including shaping the award winning grassroots media initiative Lens on Lebanon. Maakaron has also collaborated with director Rabih Mroué since 2003 on the design elements of his productions. She is director of Afas, working on documenting and researching Lebanese visual culture and its interpretation through aesthetic contemporary practices. Alongside an exhibition of her work in the level 5 space, for her residency, Maakaron will be working with Gateshead Secondary Schools. Pupils and teachers will gain a deeper understanding of Arab culture and contemporary art through creative experiences which are inspired by Maakaron’s work. Art created by the schools as part of the project will be exhibited in BALTIC Quay in December.
The residency is one of four taking place over 2 years as part of our Arab artists in residence programme which is generously supported by the Said Foundation
