Description This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition, 'Skulptur--Projekte in Munster 1997 Skulptur--Projekte in Munster 1997 represents the third attempt, after 1977 and 1987, to explore the possibilities of 'art in public space'. The exhibition "Sculpture: Projects in Munster" has become an important international showplace of contemporary art, with more than 50 international artists from all over the world developing projects for the exhibition. As in the earlier projects of 1977 and 1987, the direct confrontation with contemporary art is expected to provoke, to arouse curiosity, to stimulate contemplation and to provide material for debate. A companion to the exhibition, this book participates in this discussion, providing explanations, aids to understanding and background information. Walter Grasskamp, art historian and observer of 20th-century art, presents an introduction to the history of the project and traces its development. Including essays by Dan Graham and others, the book documents not only the works created for outdoor exhibition, but those developed for indoor presentation as well, from their conception to their final realization. With artists' biographies and bibliographies, and a bibliography on the topic of sculpture in public space, this volume represents a handbook on the development of contemporary urban sculpture in an international context.
