Description The publication "Signs of Life – Ancient Knowledge in Contemporary Art" draws attention to the increased reference to old pictorial forms made by many artists throughout the world today. The artists represented employ narration, imagination and abstraction in their works. Whether in external images of internal experience, in thought patterns that have been pictorialised, in the creation of symbolic spaces and objects, or in the telling of a story, all of these works concentrate on the essential and contribute to a deeper understanding of human existence in our time. Although a reflected use of media is a matter of course in contemporary art, what is at stake here is not so much the aspect of deconstructing the mechanisms of these forms of expression, which are often bound up in religious contexts, but rather the attempt to exploit their spiritual potential in ways that areappropriate today. In this sense the book is a catalyst for thinking about art’s capabilities vis-àvis its origins and developments, and vis-à-vis the world. On another level, it offers a platform for an immediate and personal experience of art’s potency.
